Stud bolting for industrial flange connections

Stud bolts are threaded fasteners commonly used to assemble flanges and other bolted pressure-containing connections. A stud is threaded along its length and is generally installed together with nuts on the exposed threaded ends.

For industrial piping applications, the fastener material and nut combination are selected according to the applicable piping specification, operating temperature, mechanical requirements and corrosion conditions.

Common industrial bolting requirements include ASTM A193 B7 studs with ASTM A194 2H heavy hex nuts. Other grades such as B16 and stainless steel bolting can be supplied where specified.

Rhevon can source stud bolts and matching heavy hex nuts as individual components or as complete bolting requirements for flange assemblies.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Stud Bolt & Heavy Hex Nut FAQ

Common procurement questions about flange bolting, grades, dimensions and documentation.

Stud bolts are commonly used for bolted flange connections in industrial piping, pressure equipment and mechanical assemblies. They are particularly common where controlled bolting of pressure-containing joints is required.

A stud bolt is generally threaded along its length and is installed with nuts, whereas a hex bolt normally has a formed head on one end and a threaded portion on the other. Studs are widely used for flange connections because the bolting arrangement allows nuts to be tightened from both sides of the assembly.

ASTM A193 B7 is a commonly specified alloy steel grade for industrial stud bolting, while ASTM A194 Grade 2H is commonly specified for the matching heavy hex nuts. The exact combination should always follow the applicable piping or project specification.

A typical enquiry should include stud diameter, length, thread specification, stud material grade, nut grade, quantity and finish. For flange applications, providing the flange size, pressure class or existing bolting schedule can also help confirm the required dimensions.

Yes. Stud bolts, heavy hex nuts and washers can be included in the same requirement as flanges, gaskets and pipe fittings. This is particularly useful for procurement teams sourcing complete flange connection packages.
